a popular hill station located in the Nilgiri Hills, in the Indian state of
Tamil Nadu. It is roughly 80km north of Coimbatore, and is well connected by

Located deep within the Nilgiri Hills, which literally means “Blue Mountains”, Ooty was given it’s name because of the blue haze given off by eucalyptus trees on the mountain. Moreover, the Kurunji flower, which grows once every 12 years, also gives the hills a tinge of blue. Today, the town's economy is based on tourism and agriculture, along with manufacture of medicines and photographic film.
Aside from well-known botanical gardens and hilltop views, the small town of Ooty definitely has its sights to see. It’s streets are filled with vendors selling all sorts of herbs and spices, toys and souvenirs, clothing, and much more. If you have a sweet tooth, Ooty is also famous for its fudge and chocolates. My personal favorite was the rum raisin!
Rent an SUV if you have a big group and crave the nature and trekking Hampi has to offer, or rent a Figo or Vento to take a nice relaxing drive through tea plantations and botanical gardens.

order to get the most out of your experience, rent a car from Zoom so that you

rickshaw drivers or walk down steep hills into town, you can drive however and
wherever you want. Ooty is a small town with limited access to rickshaws, so if
you don’t rent a car be prepared for a lot of walking!
Nilgiri Mountain Railway: This railway, recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-do for any traveler in Ooty. Take a taxi to Coonoor, get your tickets onto the train, and be prepared to wait in line. The train is often very crowded, and wait times can be up to an hour, but it is well worth the wait. Once on the train the views are simply magnificent, and the ambiance of riding the train while zooming through the winding hills of Ooty makes for a truly unforgettable experience.
Government Rose Garden: Easily the most famous and well known of all the tourist attractions in Ooty, the Government Rose Garden is great for nature enthusiasts, or anyone looking to simply relax in a park. The garden is home to over 20,000 varieties of roses, and is one of the largest collections of roses in the country. Some of the roses include Hybrid Tea Roses, Polyanthas, Ramblers, and even green and black roses as well!
Ooty Lake: Ooty Lake is 65 acres large and is a focal point in the town of Ooty. The Boat House along the side of the lake offers paddle boats that can be rented by the hour, and is a great way to spend a romantic afternoon. Set among the landscape of Eucalyptus trees, the lake has a railway running along one bank. During the month of May, boat races and boat pageantry are held for two days at the lake.
Insiders Tip: Make sure you eat at “Nahar’s Sidewalk Café” and try their brick oven pizza.
The best time for visiting Ooty is from October to June. The weather is pleasant in the summer, winters are cool, and for the adventurous traveler the monsoon season offers some truly unique weather.
